The Troy men’s tennis team continued its winning ways on Friday after beating Alabama A&M 7-0. The Trojans have won all three of their spring matches.
Two quick wins in doubles play for the Trojans got things started early as junior Oskar Michalek and freshman Manuel Bernard defeated the No. 2 ranked A&M players 6-3. Senior Jiaqi Duan and sophomore Pelayo Antuna defeated the No. 3 ranked team with a score of 6-3.
The Trojans faced no issues in singles play, as they won all their singles matches in two sets. Antuna and Bernard now have singles records of 3-0.
Freshman Luis Fox, ranked 6th, defeated 5th ranked Rodrigo Avana with scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Junior Oskar Michalek then defeated 2nd ranked Nishangan Nadaraja with scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
Redshirt sophomore Christopher Tasker, while ranked 4th, defeated Shakir Elvin with a score of 6-2 and 6-1.
Sophomore Antinbio Selma defeated Cheng Yang Chang with scores of 7-5 and 6-2 to close out the men’s play on Friday.
In the women’s team action, the first win of the season came on Friday as well as the second win coming after beating Alabama A&M 7-0.
The Trojans only dropped one set on their way to winning both the singles and doubles matches. Sophomore Matea Mihaljevic, while ranked in 1st, defeated Beatriz Gutierrez with two scores of 6-2. Sophomore Pei Ju Hsieh and freshman Ting-Ting Pei each won their singles matches with a convincing score of 6-1 to take singles play in Troy’s favor.
Freshman Chunxi Guo defeated 3rd ranked Ximena Ramirez and freshman Celia Montero Estevan fell early but recovered nicely to defeat Anita Bozhko, with scores of 2-6, 6-3 and 10-4.
The men’s tennis team will be in action again on Saturday, as they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardener-Webb, starting play at 2 p.m. The women’s team will take the court again on February 13, as they take on Alabama State in Montgomery at 2 p.m.
